I've tried not to be too harsh since it's just some kid doing the coloring at Penders' request. I actually think it would be a fun fan project taking old Archie comics and redrawing them to better suit the games, but to try and make money off of it really is in bad taste. I will say I really dislike the edits to Tails. His head looks bulbs without the hair tufts to balance things out.
Also, if Penders really wanted to prove his critics wrong he'd actually finish TLSC. Fun fact: If the Konductor had started his comic at the same time as TLSC, we'd be reading the 50th issue by now, and yet Penders has only produced one issue's worth of original comic pages

If I had to choose one of Penders' creations to save and bring into a hypothetical new Archie comic, I think it'd be Elias. The echidna characters are largely crap, and the good ones (Wynmacher and Remington) could probably be substituted with new characters the way Scourge was replaced with Surge. I'd fill the Scourge void by writing Surge and Jet better to fill the role.

Elias, though, is both likable and has a lot of interesting character potential. I was really impressed with the stories they wrung out of him in the preboot, especially since he seemed like such a stock character at the beginning.

Assuming Penders' worldbuilding is gone, you'd probably have to have him be some kind of esteemed echidna tribal warrior with an Incan name (Huaman? Atahualpa? We know more backstory about literally every character except for Sonic and Eggman. Tails was committing Bird genocide, Amy was exploring, Knuckles was guarding his island, Rouge was a world-class thief. We even know more about Prof Pickle (attended university, got his PhD, became the world's foremost expert on the Gaia Manuscripts). We don't even know if Eggman's got an actual PhD, or if he's just grandstanding. Really all we can say is that Eggman was alive and presumably doing something before Sonic was born

TLDR: Penders is considering making Edmund and Dimitri no longer brothers so Knuckles and Julie-Su aren't perceived as incestuous. Personally, I think changing the plot is dumb, especially considering they're not really related but then again I ship Rough and Tumble. I posted this before:

I think selling a physical copy is fine, but not releasing a digital one for free at some point is no good. One of the few things Sega does well is not hassling fans for creating fancomics/fangames/etc and is even fine with them making money off of it provided the content's freely available. Nintendo is always shutting down fangames, even if they're not making any money. With this increasing trend of locking fan-content behind permanent paywalls, I'm worried Sega will eventually crack down on the entire fan community.

Looking at the box office sales, it's even worse. Mexico and Japan have similar sized populations and yet only 140k people went to see Sonic 2 in Japan, whereas 13.8m did in Mexico. Even New Zealand, with its 5m population got 250k to show up!

If you look at the sales of Sonic and the Black Knight, an unpopular game that only hardcore fans would play, we can estimate that the US has 60k Sonic fans, the UK has 100k, and Japan has 13k. Interestingly, the Archie comics sold an average of 6.5k copies per issue so the entire Japanese fanbase is only twice the size of the Archie Sonic fanbase. Sad!

I've been part of the Sonic fandom for too long to know it will never change, I witnessed the original Shadouge Knuxouge Wars, the first persecutions of Sonadow, and even after almost 25 years, the situation is the same, only the ships might be different.

I was like that back in my youth, yes, I confess, I was quite the hardcore shipper. Nowadays, I take my ships for what they are and live on the crumbs Sega gives.

I bueno whenever I see Knuxouge fans complain about how Shadouge fans raid their twitter or tumblr posts, when the same Knuxouge fans are raiding Shadouge posts at the same time. Ultimately, it is a vicious circle, and I'm glad I got out of it (but will not say which side I belong to).

I totally get you here, some ships are truly harmful to the integrity of the characters, specially when they end up being used for trolling and memeing.

My biggest issue in general is people not accepting the nature of their own ships. For example, some ships are born out of NSFW content, and even thrive mostly there, something I don't think is inherently wrong, it's just their reality.
But, if you happen to mention that to the shippers? They foam at the mouth and launch at your throat.

There are the shippers who live in the denial that their ships are somehow canon, grasping at straws trying to come up with scenes that demostrate it (Ho, boy... back in 2006 there was already hour long video essays dedicated to explain how a ship is canon). More often than not, they are misreading scenes or fail to understand the real purpose of them. And then, if someone happens to have an unlikely ship involving one party of theirs, they immediately go to shit on it. Which, brings me back to the other point: accept and understand the nature of your ship.

I'm a huge Shadikal guy, and back in the day, boy did people joke on us hard... but, we understood the nature of our ship and stood by it. Nowadays, we are mostly seen as a harmless curiosity that nobody has any real issues with (in big part due to, and I need to say it, Cylent-Nite's extraordinary work with those characters).

Ha your all good, as the biggest and only Mordred X Sally shiller I get liking a niche pairing, though it's a ship I'm mostly contributing to without other talented artists making it unpaid and of their own choices besides ChaosCroc. Sega pretty much openly uses Sonic Team as a place to train up new devs before moving them on to more important projects (that somehow never sell as well as Sonic does). If Nintendo did the same thing, there'd be fucking riots but as Sonic fans we're supposed to just put up with it. The worst thing is Sega's completely right, it'll always outsell its other projects even if Iizuka's given no budget and junior devs

Credit where it's due, he does have a long-term plan to sneak out a less shit Sonic game. He's been constructing it in parts starting with the new gameplay in Frontiers, other character gameplay in the DLC, and finally using Sonadow Generations to iterate on level design that isn't just grind rails over an uninhabited island. I don't think the next game after Sonadow Generations will be actually good, but it will be the closest thing to good we'll have seen in a while

Exactly. They're the icy, focused, ultra-badass government counterpart to the free-spirited heroes, so it seems natural. You can even have moments where Team Dark are the ones in the right and Team Sonic is being too reckless or whatever. It's the best part of the Sonic Heroes Team Autism.

Shadow, Rouge, and Omega are also usually at their best with each other to bounce off of. See 06 and Shadow Fall.

Scourge being a hellion and an asshole is also a good example of the "evil counterpart" trope done well. A lot of fictional heroes are pretty dull, so the evil counterpart falls flat. But Sonic has a really distinct and iconic personality, so Scourge actually can parallel Sonic's personality and take it to extremes and become an interesting character himself. It was the same with 006 in Goldeneye -- James Bond has a distinctive suave personality, so Alec Trevelyan was memorable as a dark reflection of that.

You’d think that after ousting Eggman and his forces, there’d be no more excitement on Little Planet. At least all the fighting will have them better prepared for what comes next! That person that did that really weird and incoherent Sonic comic with traces of official art has put out even more. There's so much to storytime, I guess I'll never be able to get around to doing those IDW issues.
