IDW Thread #1

No.179
Full issues, previews, discussion, fanart, etc.

This thread is for the IDW Sonic comics. So if that's all you want to talk about then you can do so here (you can still talk about IDW in the general thread). Let's start with Fang the Hunter #3. Why that? Because it just came out and I don't feel like posting the previous issues! But don't worry, here's links to the first two.

Interestingly, the Hooligans/Bark and Bean being mercenaries is something Flynn came up with. Bean and Bark are actually Sonic's friends in Sonic the Fighters, to the point where he entrusted each of them with guarding a chaos emerald. Fang stole his emerald from another of Sonic's friends, likely Mighty, Ray, or Vector

I won't lie, I would prefer IDW to be scrapped. It's a failed series and anything short of a major shakeup isn't going to save it and I doubt they'd go looking for a replacement for Evan and Ian. Also, they seemed to have let go some people to save costs. The ship is slowly sinking.

Yeah I read the comic as it's own thing instead of just disliking because it's not another but never felt too attached to anything. Always kinda did feel they blew their load early with metal virus as that seems like a later in life type of arc for a comic than so early. but That Eggperial City arc really turned me off from it.

I guess that possible shake up you're refering could possibly be that new phantom rider guy but he's gonna be tied to just a racing type rival me thinks so not THAT big of a deal.

It's such a shame that Lanolin did not turn out to be the Sally expy for IDW. I would've written her the same way and given her and Sonic the most intense friendly tension that even if there wasn't anything romantic in the comic, the fandom would ship them to hell and back. It'd be the most eyebrow raising friendship. Every time you see Sonic, he's with her and you wonder what they were doing before. And of course there'd be banter and swapping smug looks.

As always, it feels like writer burnout at this point and any attempt at ambition seems to not be worth it for the writers. I think about Barnes and Scrapnik Island was fine. But he does seem like the kind of person that doesn't mind the strict Sega restrictions. He might be better suited for writing a truly game version of Sonic.
No.1483

>>1407
>always wondering when idw will go under so keep the stories short and simple
They're not even doing this. Surge and Kit needed a dozen issues for their introductory arc.

But I agree that they're likely just going through the motions. After all Ian's been through -- legal shenanigans with Penders, reboots, fandom drama, mandates, etc. -- who can blame him for not giving a shit?

>Barnes and Scrapnik Island was fine
Scrapnik Island is a great story. If Barnes was writing for the rest of IDW, and doing it as well as he did Scrapnik Island, we wouldn't be having this conversation. But he seemed to actually have enthusiasm and want to portray the characters well.
No.1484
I thought scrapnik was overrated shit and the moment I got to Mecha saying the meme line is when I disliked it forever, and don't want barnes on the books ever again. I really don't get the glazing over memberberry rehash the mini series.

Imposter Syndrome was Ian's last big story before stepping away and working for Sega more directly. He got his big milestone issue and to kill off his villain OC. But in the last year or two things have definitely slowed down and shortened.

For me I just liked the pacing and sense of stakes on Scrapnik Island way better than anything else in IDW. It's four issues, doesn't have a pointless page of Whisper crying, and Mecha actually seems like a threat to Sonic unlike Surge or Clutch or any of the shitty IDW-original villains. Sure, Sonic's foot is injured, but Mecha puts up a decent fight despite being pretty chewed up as well, which is more than you can say for Surge.

It also lends a bit of credibility to IDW Sonic's forgiving nature since he's actually able to convince Mecha Sonic to change.

Alexandre_Cabanel_-_Fallen_Angel.jpeg, 8500xNA, 1 times posted
No.1640

>>1639
That painting is The Fallen Angel, and was painted in 1847 by French artist Alexandre Cabanel. It's based on Milton's poem Paradise Lost and the Book of Revelation, specifically its account of the War in Heaven. Here we see Lucifer cast out from Heaven, covering his face in shame and shedding a single tear.

If we look at his expression, that tear isn't one of sorrow or contrition, but one of rage and resentment. There is only one thing on his mind: revenge. Some other things to note are the contrast between the soft forms of Lucifer and the angels in the sky, and the harsh dark angles of the rocks below. While depicted in the perfect Greek hero style, Lucifer is not just naked (in contrast to the angels above) but "laid bare." His plot has been uncovered and his defiance against the Creator is out in the open for all to see. You'll also note that his wings are mottling from their original blue color, like autumn leaves. He's no longer like his brethren in the sky, but is becoming something else

One of the really cool things about this painting is that people like it for a variety of reasons, from admiration of his continued defiance against impossible odds and sympathy for the situation he's found himself in, to satisfaction that the righteous justice of divine punishment has been met out against his arrogance. Personally, I just love how well the emotion has been conveyed. That, and I have a thing for redheads

The original image is over 50mb, so I had to compress it a heap. You can find it here:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f7/Alexandre_Cabanel_-_Fallen_Angel.jpg

I've been trying for days to write something about the latest IDW issue that isn't just pointless bitching, so this is the best I can do to contribute to this thread

Most people familiar with that painting might not know that he actually did a followup in 1848, called The Evening Angel. Gone is the anger and thoughts of revenge, and instead we see Lucifer draped in cloth with a contemplative expression, sitting comfortably and overlooking a modern (for 1848) city. Here is a being that's made peace with his past and separated himself from his Creator, but is wondering what to do next

I'm sure you can all draw parallels between these two paintings and Shadow yourselves
