In my opinion, the main problem with his writing is the bland characterization. So originally these Sonic comics went with a two part longform story, a couple shortform stories then a one part longform story for the longest time. Guess people started to get kinda bored of how episodic the comic was with how nothing was really happening in the world besides cartoon evil antics, which is why Archie was originally going to cancel it?

Okay since we're tangentially mentioning Sonic Prime I legit see no issue with the show. Yeah the Shatterverse concept is kinda dumb but the plot is fun.
Also I think Chaos Sonic being annoying is kind of the point, and honestly? It kinda works for an "evil Sonic" concept, at least for me. We're so used to fanworks making the concept be much more angsty (hell, even Fleetway!Super is just the "it's not me i have a superpowered evil side" trope), but an evil Sonic being an absolutely insufferable and sadistic faggot kind of really makes sense, especially for Prime!Sonic who's such a disaster himbo.
