As ridiculous as any ship is, I always liked Tails and Rouge as being something out of convenience. Sonic's too much of a free spirit, Knuckles is too spiritual and dedicated to his duties, and Shadow tends to be off doing his own thing, brooding. I think Okida abandoned Unbound simply because he recognized that it was probably WAY beyond his skill level at the time. Like, I was the guy who was posting the individual chapters that didn't get made into comics, and I think I only got 2-3. Out of nearly 20 or so. I don't expect him to come back to it, given the relative success of STC, but it's clear his writing and skill has come a long way since Unbound.

It's because the sort of obsessive nutcases those later Fleetway ride threads attracted weren't there for Fleetway content, or at least not that alone. They were there to use Fleetway as a bridge to throw shade at Archie without reprisal. Okida adding in Archie stuff, amongst others, stood well and truly in the face of that.

Pride. The anons that loved Fleetway did so in a hipster kind of way. Their comic was obscure and it was more "game accurate" and "did things first and better" and all that. Therefore it was infinitely better than Archie and when they saw Okida merging them, they got pissed.
