He's referred to as Mecha Sonic in the Chaotix special but is then given the name of Metal Sonic when he appears in Sonic 86. Sonic even calls him Metal Sonic as if that was always his name. That Metal Sonic eventually becomes Shard but Eggman makes a new Metal Sonic in issue 186 and that becomes the one that everyone is familiar with. Like with a lot of things, things are in flux so the initial naming is incorrect and gets fixed later.
