With its focus on exploration, it's not for everyone. I found the level layouts frustrating and the bosses could be better (except Metal Sonic, that one's fantastic).

No worries! Yeah, there's a reason Sonic 2's the most popular of the classics I still prefer S3&K. CD's got a pretty interesting history. The team that developed Sonic 1 split, with Oshima and others staying in Japan and developing CD as a pseudo-remake of Sonic 1, and Naka and the rest moving to America to work on Sonic 2. Not sure about the flowers, but it's probably got something to do with the flowers Sonic creates at the end of Sonic 1. All the badniks are insects, which probably has something to do with it. The generators are a great feature of the game, since it shows how Robotnik is exploiting time to take over Little Planet, I'd definitely lean into this for any story. Fleetway's adaption did to great effect.

All the games are getting adapted and merged with other stuff. Sonic 1 is very brief in comparison. Sonic CD is indeed a strange one, not just in gameplay but also story. But it'll be a great way to merge two comic continuities and lighten the load for Sonic 2's story which will include another game. The Genesis games being light on story allows for that to happen. The Sonic Adventure games and beyond won't have that luxury which is fine.
