It's mostly a thing because Blaze's reserved personality contrasts well with Amy's outgoing spunk. Also because Blaze is alternate universe Sonic, with the crucial difference that she's not a gaslighting asshole.

Hell, even the newest TailsTube has Sonic directly referencing Wachowski and Tails having dancing tutorials as well as just dancing away. They're also pretty much using TailsTube to directly the into Frontiers as well.

For once, it actually seems like they're trying to stay true to "making the media feel more consistent".

I also find it funny that it gives infinite boost too, which is probably them trying to match up with Wachowski having one of the best speed feats of any Sonic by speeding from Montana to the Pacific and back in a little less than 3 seconds.

Most variations of Sonic couldn't for long periods either. They'd lose momentum even with their initial burst of speed (recall that as a rule, Sonic doesn't tend to go full speed even when it would logically make sense to solve his issues) and sink like a rock, which is a death sentence when you can't swim. Hell, Movie actually DOES keep running across the water for a good long while, but it's the wave that ultimately does him in. Some versions, like Boom, can't even stand being NEAR water for too long.

I think the only versions of Sonic who have good demonstrations of handling water are Modern/Classic and Archie.
