Most of the personalities have a function like a tough protector to deal with scary stuff, a childlike one to re-experience a childhood that was stolen, a sexual/slutty one who can have intimate relations without being re-traumatized, etc. It's actually very sad, and in some cases better to play along since it's essentially the only way they can get through life.
