Personally I found that moment with Tails and the FF to be a moment of growth because it was a moment of Sonic pivoting away of just seeing Tails as a little bro who can't handle himself, can't be trusted/respected as an equal, and that he knows what is best for him.

This is why I'm trying to create an AU fan comic. I just want to rewrite that entire arc at the very least. The earliest version of Sally was... made for slapstick, but she was demonstrated to be a strong leader, and needed development for when things started to turn into serious lore. Then Penders and Bollers shot down that potential repeatedly. I want to replace that god awful gap between early Sally and Ian's Sally. The Sally we love would defy her father and the Source. This would be her big moment. I would still let the slap happen though, or something similar to replace it. Why? Because Sally went through a lot of shit and she didn't want to lose Sonic all over again. Who wouldn't get that upset and irrational? The problem was, she was written pretty poorly before that issue and so the readers just weren't having it, it was the last straw.

One thing comes to mind, in that issue where Knuckles is raging and fighting Thrash after he takes the echidnas off-world. The dialogue easily can be interpreted as Ian fighting with Penders and being angry with him taking away everything. Except it works here, I love the raw emotion that Knuckles displays here, and it gives the readers that know better a glimpse of how not just Ian, but how the entire Archie Team felt at the time.

The catharsis from the last part of House of Cards was good. After having this tension build between Tails and Sonic for so many issues having them apologize to each other it this was satisfying and a genuinely feel good moment. Sonic gets character growth after having being too egotistical "Tails practically worships me" and gets a humbling experience and respects Tails more afterwards. This tension is finally over and the two are brothers again.

This is actually fine. I'm tired of the whole "Sonic is Jesus" shtick. Even he has his limits. But hold that thought for a moment.

Consider this, Sonic is, by default, a beacon of hope and inspiration for his friends. And (depending on who is writing him and when its being written), he is there for them because he cares, a lot.

But as as I was saying, even he has a limit. With so much shit going on and his girlfriend being a robotic slave that is forced to destroy, maim, and kill against her will, at some point, even he will just get worn down.

This is where his friends come in. They give back the care and motivation that he has always given to him, even when its tough love right here. And this was a fine way to snap Sonic back to reality.

Being at the top of the world, and simultaneously holding it on its shoulders, is no easy job. And sometimes, you will have dark moments. But when you have friends that are able to help you with that weight, and help you see the same light you gave to them to begin with, then nothing can stop you.

And if something does, you'll have died trying. That should be the relationship between Sonic and his friends, and the reality.

Because that's the charm of the games being in the story, and again, the slapstick charm from the earlier comics gets seemingly retconned, at least to a degree, anyway.

Other parts of the comic also make it clear at times that death and vast destruction are very real, they just couldn't go into it all the time. Like helloooo, the Egg Grapes, instances of mass destruction, Sally getting machine-gunned to death, Eggman dabbing on GUN, the SGW which pretty much killed everyone then made copies of them, etc.

Suffering is indeed fun BUT GOD DOES IT HURT BECAUSE NO CLOSURE.

Romance isn't fun, but there times where it was sweet. I like how Sonic and Sally got back together in Ian's run before shit went down. Sonic: Genesis gets shat on but it was a cozy story arc and seeing Sonic and Sally falling in love all over again, remembering, pushing through, and their love and bond transcending space and time was a treat. But then of course, there is the suffering. We get a major subversion of expectations when the narrative of Genesis is shattered by the SGW. Their bond could be broken after all...

Archie may have it's little quirks, but their version of Sonic remains one of my favorites. He has all the typical behavior you'd expect from the blue blur, but he also has some shockingly potent emotional scenes you wouldn't get elsewhere. Like seeing Sonic get so genuinely irritated at Eggman that he broke his own speed limit in the Egg Grape arc will forever stick in my mind as one the rawest moments in the franchise.
