Mega Man #37-40
The search is on for Wily’s “rogue” robot masters! But instead of finding them, Mega Man finds a threat so great, it’ll last for 100 years! Which means that it’s up to X and the others in the future to stop it! But what happened to Rock? Why is his busted helmet there? Also, XANDER PAYNE returns and he’s going to go on a trip… through time!

Okay, this is something that always bothered me about MMX. One hundred years, is not that long. The Classic era is treated like it's the distant lost past, where everything is shrouded in myth, and the locations and technology from then are archaeological finds. A single century is, needless to say, nowhere near long enough for that to happen. There are centenarians in real life, and they don't have the bullshit medical tech and cybernetics that the Classic series had. Shit, if it were five hundred or even just two, I'd have bought it, but one is just plain silly.

Zero is more or less a warmachine, a walking talking weapons built to destroy his creators enemies. X was built as a human simulation, an experiment to bridge humanity with machines, though he was given ability to fight because his creator knew violence was inevitable. In some ways you can even argue Zero is autistic because he literally wasn't built to emphasize and doesn't have the emotional hang ups X has when it comes to fighting.( Tho I doubt the Archie team would have implemented that part of his personality so much)

X is better but at the same time X already has a realised story. Classic barely has any story to speak of so I would've preferred they kept to classic

Hot take but Sigma is a terrible villain. He doesn’t have Wily’s charisma to be a reoccurring threat. Vile should have been the main villain for the X series. He was built up ever since the first stage and is a part of the game’s most emotional moment, Sigma is just some generic bald guy that becomes the final boss out of nowhere and then keeps coming back.

Personally, I would have liked to see a brand new villain for almost each game. Sigma should have stayed dead after MMX1. If you wanted to tease a sequel, do a Metal Gear-ish thing where we just get text of maybe Vile speaking to a new, unknown villain that would show up in X2. It was a breath of fresh air when we got Lumine in MMX8, and after it happened, I was annoyed that it didn't happen after the first game.

I think the especially annoying thing about Xander is that he's a total strawman in a book that otherwise presents a balanced and nuance look at the concept. Ultimately it's pro-AI, because duh, but it gives the characters who are opposed noble qualities and logical arguments. The exception is Xander. He's just a one-note terrorist who wants to genocide robots because he's butthurt over a stroke of bad luck. Elec Man even attempted to apologize to him, and he still reuses to accept that he's in the wrong. That's not unrealistic, or even out of place, but it is damn obnoxious.
