Bollers stories were pretty serious, but there were jokes here and there. Things like the cartoonishly biased way Robotnik tells his own life story, or that spaceship having “Mobius or bust! written on the side, or Elias not noticing his gaggle of fangirls while he’s walking around brooding. And obviously Ian and co.’s comics have tons of comic relief, with a lot of focus on sillier characters like Bean or Honey, and pretty much all of the current artists just LOVE making the characters make silly faces (and we all love them for it). I mean, good lord, Ian even brought back Scratch and Grounder in BOTH Archie continuities
>But with Penders, most of the time all you really got was like... some antagonistic banter maybe? An occasional groanworthy one-liner? Knuckles calling someone “bub”? Sometimes there’s stuff like the “First Date” arc of the Knuckles comic--you know, with Knuckles trying to avoid being spotted in that fancy restaurant by Julie-Su, and with Vector trying to get a date. Which I guess was SUPPOSED to be funny? But, you know, isn’t? But most of the time he didn’t even TRY to make it funny. He’s just so caught up in the drama and the worldbuilding that there’s no time for silliness

I wonder what would have happened had Bollers stayed and Ian Flynn and him shared writing duties and what that would cause to the story. I think both were great writers and it would be interesting to see what would happen if they got to bounce ideas off of each other.
