Well… we were gonna have the Metal Virus Arc in Archie. So I would say that the suffering would have to continue until at least then, which would be followed up by a final showdown where Eggman finally gets his lights knocked out for good.

The key differences between Game and Archie Silver that make the traitor storyline so terrible is that Game Silver for his naivete and rashness is still competent and adaptable to the point where he can actually trick Sonic(both in 06 and Rivals 2), thwart both Eggmen’s plans and is almost always right in his suspicions while Archie Silver is just rash and naive. He’s extremely impulsive and jumps at the slightest sniff of a lead which causes him to constantly get misled, be wrong and offend people. The idea is that he benefits from having a partner but Ian takes that idea way too far and makes him incompetent and burdensome without someone to hold his hand(which only got worse in IDW). What’s about to happen would simply not happen to picrel.
People think that Game Silver is retarded for getting tricked by Mephiles but that’s just not supposed to be retarded in universe. Mephiles also tricked Blaze and is indistinguishable from Shadow(because of fucking hedgehogs blindness that makes people confuse Sonic for Shadow). Every time after that he’s not shown to be gullible or even trusting, even with Mephiles he questioned his plan and didn’t go along with it until he was physically thrown back in time which he previously thought was impossible.

Killing off Tommy was a no-brainer. Nobody liked Tommy because he was obnoxious in every way. Giving him this heroic sacrifice, which kind of a repeat of his debut, would bookend his story where it should have ended the first time. Unfortunately Ian did too good of a job because there were people who wanted him back because he was cool again. To a lesser degree there was Sir Connery. He was a nobody and only super turbo nerds knew who he was or cared. Giving him a heroic sacrifice was probably more than he deserved but it moved the plot along and it removed some of the magical mcguffins from the mix. When Antoine was blown up by Metal Sonic he was suppose to die in the original intention. There was a long term plan to bring him back. It wasn't going to be easy and it would require all the freedom fighters to do it. It will be covered in Lost Hedgehog Tales. If you're going to bring a character back from the dead it needs to be something grand. That was the plan but people were so reactive to Sally just getting roboticized that they realized that actually pulling the trigger and killing Antoine would break the fandom so they dialed back to a simple maiming. Ultimately they would be able to follow the same course to bring Antoine back to the fold. It was vague enough they could walk it back without saying it was a retcon. It's a case of feedback changing internal plans.

It's like Eggman suddenly realized that he could use his robots as suicide bombers and that was it, in a setting where characters constantly survive much greater damage due to toon physics. There wasn't any big fight or anything that made it feel like a great sacrifice, even if he did protect Elias.
Eggman commenting that he can just rebuild Metal later beforehand just makes this even more apparent.

Naugus was apparently supposed to die after his defeat, so the heroes can his emerald as well. Ian was also clearly setting up a meeting between Silver and present Mogul, so maybe he'd convince him to borrow his emerald somehow. Then they'd get the other four from Feist and GUN and they'd be good to go. Finitevus was supposed to be a major villain again for a while, there's a good chance the emeralds would have factored in there as well. It all adds up.

Normally I'm a Silvernigger but I actually hate 40% of Ian's take on him in Archie and 100% of his take on him in IDW so here's Silver face down dead in a bog. I like to think Sonic also raped him beforehand.

Penders is not as bad as I thought he would be in terms of writing considering his reputation still think he's a jerk because of what he did with the lawsuits though. And Ian Flynn is slightly overhyped but I do like most of his work
