I'm actually happy we got such a long run of blows to the heroes. I often find their winning streaks last way too long so this balances things out. Had the comics continued Sonic and the Freedom Fighters would have had story arcs for years and it would have been so satisfying to see them fight their way back up top.

It's probably just because Sonic itself isn't very popular in Japan so they don't bother really trying to worldbuild at all these days. The only people that could make a good Sonic RPG or what have you with good worldbuilding would be fans.
