Yeah. The writers want to push the OCs because it's easier to write them but they keep missing opportunities to actually push them. They're just there to fill up space and it amounts to nothing. The last arc started with Sonic, Tangle, Whisper, and Lanolin going as a team to spy on Eggman. They get separated and Sonic's backup is just the entire game cast. Meanwhile the three OCs waste time and hardly do anything. Only notable thing is Whisper hits Eggman when he's distracted. It's frustrating to keep seeing it happen.

I really wish Ian tried a bit harder to make it like Archie. I know some will find that damning but if you're going to make a lot of new characters then you need to pretend you're writing a new area in the Archie world. And that means using the game characters more sparsely. As soon as they all showed up to help Sonic, the OCs lost all relevancy to the story. I'm not sure if Evan or Ian wrote that but it's a shared issue I have with them. It could've just been Amy and Tails that came to help and they regroup with the Diamond Cutters and take down Eggman from there. Smaller team, half game characters and half OCs, everyone gets cool moments, sell the new team with Lanolin proving herself. Easy.

Stanley's brief arc and the Chaotix issue with Clutch were both just simple fun, as many problems as Scrapnik has that was pretty decent. Good for anyone who does like IDW for what it is, but coming off of Archie it leaves something to be desired.

I just want them to better understand what they can or can't do and play to those strengths. Look at the best stuff the games had to offer and translate that to comics with a fresh coat of paint. Everyone is shackled by the mandates and trying to see what they can get away with. They should just focus on crazy new enemies, fast and furious fights, and dazzling new zones with some theme to them. Close calls, jaw dropping feats, and overall action packed fun. Sega frowns on anything too ambitious so go the action movie blockbuster route. And you can even build on it. Make a new rival that pops up every once in a while and builds up their character and motivation. And IDW has about half of that.

Something different would be nice. The series needs an identity and direction. That can be on the editor as well as the main writer. As exhausting as it was, Metal Virus had an ongoing plot and danger that needed to be resolved.
