Personally, I think long arcs intercut with several smaller stories is a good way to satisfy everyone, especially if it allow to explore a bit the new status quo the conclusion of each long arc set.

Self-contained arcs can be good - Archie pulled them oft. 'Self-contained arcs' with ZERO continuity or impact on the world or setting are objectively terrible and the death-knell of any long-form writing. In fact, Slashy wants to go beyond this and have absolutely zero worldbuilding at all, with only shit like the same handful of Classic stories being repeated over and over if even that. A comic series can't fucking survive on that - it's a fundamentally retarded idea.

You need a world to build upon to have any sort of 'arc' at all.

So Classic Sonic is that and also many of the modern games. The only plot thread that ties Heroes into Adventure 1 and 2 is Shadow who has amnesia to deliberately make it easy for newcomers.

Only the comics ever prioritized continuity, the games never did it was always a background element to give a minimal amount of impact to stories but it could not even get that right (see the moon).

I didn't mentioned Sonic CD because it's not really attached to the rest of the plot, but it being there doesn't change anything. Sonic 1, 2 and 3&knuckles is still a long arc about the Chaos Emerald and the Master Emerald at the end.

That CD takes place between 1 and 2 change nothing to that (and it always made sense it was set there anyways)

Sonic 2 and 3 are like the only games directly connected storywise besides Colors and Generations,Mania and Forces, Shadow and Adventure 2/Heroes. If anything it seems like the trend is that directly connecting stories in the games leads to worse stories outside of Sonic 3.
