More of a variation usually, but only if they're basically just the same character but a different gender. If they're vastly different, then they're closer to an OC, at least to me.

They suck in almost every continuity. In the Movies, they were murderous mass-conquerors who finally got exterminated by Longclaw at the cost of her life, in the games they all got wiped out stupidly following Pachacamac in his quest for absolute echidna supremacy, and Archie needs no explanation.

I think Fleetway and Underground have the only versions of the echidnas who weren't total monsters, and I'm 80% sure the former case is only because they were fighting the Drakkon instead.

Yeah, it's a shame. Especially because reading through it, there's a bunch of cute little details that are either missing from the comic or were outright cut, like Ray basically erasing his fear response or it being made explicitly that wishes drastically alter your personality in the Pandemonium universe to explain how Nicky goes from his usual self to all overly confident, smug, and cocky as Sonic.

I know that's probably a compromise of the change in medium, but it still hurts.
