I was thinking about Eggman and his motives for villainy earlier at work and I couldn’t decide whether he genuinely doesn’t know why he actually wants to take over the world or he’s almost suicidally determined to ruin everyone in Mobius’ lives. The Metal Virus saga alone showed just how absolutely out of his gourd he is, especially with wanting to ruin a party that everyone threw because he could. But at the same time I feel like he thinks being evil is the only thing he can do despite the fact that he adapted into the role of a kindly repairman way too quickly.

The artist seems have a lot of the story planned out , if you check the covers he made for each future issue.

Varies based on the version of Robotnik. In the case of IDW, you CAN genuinely see that Eggman DID enjoy being Mr. Tinker deep down when Sonic calls him out on his actions later on during the Metal Virus arc and he's going over how he got appreciation through the " building toys and hearing the laughter of children, and helping people" and so on. He's genuinely searching for some level of appreciation ad earnest gratitude for what he does; he just thinks the only way he can get that is through tyranny and ruining the lives of others to FORCE all of Mobius to appreciate him. This is the same case for Boom Eggman and X Eggman, especially Boom who has risked his life at several points to save others and per his own admission, just wants Sonic to see him as his friend behind all of his constant attacks and evil plots. Even AOTSH isn't really that evil at the end of the day.

Others are just flat-out lunatics though. SatAM, Fleetway, Archie, and Movie Robotnik couldn't give less of a shit about the appreciation or care of others and just want to enslave everyone or outright kill them. Though admittedly, early Archie with the original Robotnik did have some lines he wouldn't cross and even he displayed shock when he thought one of his weapons outright vaporized Sonic instead of whatever its intended function was. I feel like that's a good way to describe it. Penders does something similar but the results are atrocious. This comic makes it work a lot better. The artist's got a fairly nice grasp of how to create forms and shapes by using dodge/burn shading. When I saw some of these pages, at first glance I thought the characters were screenshots of CGI models rather than 2D art. That's difficult to achieve; most of the time 3D and 2D art look so different and clash so much that it's really easy to tell them apart (just look at the clips from that new Rescue Rangers and all the complaints that Chip wasn't actually hand-drawn).

I'm not even sure Movie Robotnik necessarily believes in a greater good for the world, he just wants power and will take any fast corner towards attaining it. Like, he's all about Sonic in the first film but the instant he learns about the Master Emerald, he completely dismisses Sonic's power as irrelevant and laser-focuses on claiming the Emerald for himself. He still has Sonic living rent free in his head, but solely as an enemy or threat to his plans and not as the energy source he once viewed him as.

Also, Fleetway has at least ONE aspect to him that implies some hidden depths; that one Christmas story. He wanted to ruin Christmas for the rest of Mobius but when he failed, he fell into a depressive slump because he realized that everyone else has friends and family to enjoy the holiday with regardless of what he does, and he has nobody.

Yeah, having read through the rest of the issue the art's really grown on me. The photograph backgrounds remind me a lot of the skyboxes in the early 3D Sonic games. I think he's also using Garry's mod to get the videogame level backgrounds. Ultimately, I think it works because it's a stylistic choice, not laziness. Penders would just paste in a photo background and call it a day, whereas here you can tell a lot of thought's gone into it.
I had the same thought about them looking like CGI models, it could be the artist's painting over models posed in Garry's mod. There's an integration between the 2D and 3D that while looking a bit weird, is really compelling.

I was curious about his work methods so I looked through some of his comments to see if anyone's ever asked him to elaborate on how he does his comics. I was wondering if there's any use of CGI models along with the 2D art (aside from the backgrounds). I found pic related. Basically, he's drawn a large number of 2D art assets that he compiles into the panels and then edits their lighting effects and stuff to fit the scene.

It's an interesting method that helps streamline things, and he seems to be pretty efficient at using it. But on the other hand, this method also means that he's not drawing the characters for new panels over and over and over again. He's getting practice at shading and lighting, but not at drawing the characters. He has very ambitious goals, and they're way more difficult to accomplish if he's not getting more exercise at drawing. Those artists who managed to get super awesome and popular didn't start out that way. They all used to suck once, back when they were less experienced, and they only reached new heights by constantly drawing more and learning more.

For a fancomic, it's a pretty clever work method though. They have lower standards, and it's nice to just see someone devote time and effort into a long work. But doing art that way, it'll be hard to get good enough to become another Evan Stanley and join the official comics team.

It's interesting how it's basically kinda like cutout animation where you put together pieces and swap them for different scenes. I don't remember seeing other comics that went for an approach like this.
It wouldn't work in all comics, since most artists prefer to use lineart. When you're reusing a bunch of drawn assets and making them either bigger or smaller in certain scenes, the lineart will look thicker or thinner. It makes it really obvious to notice that the original art wasn't supposed to look like that, and copy/pasting becomes easy to spot. But this comic avoids that effect since there's no lineart. And the lack of lineart combined with pretty competent shading also makes the characters look sort of like the CGI Sonic game models.
Now that I know how the artist did it, I can notice the reuse of 2D assets. But I really did get fooled for a moment there; I thought that there was some kind of use of 3D renders in the comic.

And yeah, artists like Evan don't just know how to handle the character art, they also draw their backgrounds. They can use their imagination to create impossible creatures, objects and sceneries. For a published comic, it wouldn't be okay to use stock photos as backgrounds. But as long as the aim is to simply create fancomics, copyright issues are more lax and it's fine.

The year is 2041, and most of the world is an irradiated wasteland. With almost all of humanity wiped out, the remainder live in small fortified enclaves scattered around what remains of the planet. Few satellites have survived the disaster, meaning there is only enough bandwidth for a small recreational imageboard.

On that board, the remainder of humanity discuss sequential images centered on a blue hedgehog in a ritual known as The Ride™. Now in its 20th year, 6,900 (Nice!) imagesets have been shown by an individual known as Konductor-kun, delivered through an artifact known as The List, which he assures posters is 'cutting down'.

Posters communicate using an esoteric dialect centered on attractive young homosexuals, microwaves, news reporters, inter-dimensional police officers, and the terminal portions of legs. Ready for a break so the official Storytime Conductor can storytime IDW issues 150-200, Konductor-kun posts Shock and Awe #21.

I remember that one, it was so bad they had to use the "Many Hands" pen name since no one wanted to be known for that garbage. I initially wondered if they forgot to paste in the artwork, only showing the background and dialogue. I'm guessing the layouts were done, but the penciller/inker didn't have time to finish most panels.
They actually remade it for Sonic Free Comic Book Day 2011, which was nice.

I still hold out hope that the IDW the threads will be fine, but I can see why he might want to step down. It's a lot of effort getting these comics ready and thinking up something to say for each panel. Even doing that one ~after dark~ last thread was a lot more effort than I thought it'd be excluding all the censoring and rewriting I had to to to make it jan-jan safe. I'd be exhausted having to do hundreds of pages a day, every day for months without stopping.

I am happy that people enjoy the story. Just because I say I'm not going to storytime a comic doesn't mean I won't storytime a comic. I have my own issues with it but there's still a log to like about it. I just wish the pages were at a larger resolution and not so dark a lot of the time.

It was the perfect mix up hype of WTF. Honestly I was kind of saddened to see that the next issue is being done as an animation. There's quite a few of the usual comic artists going this route and it has eaten up a lot of their productivity over the past few years. But Gigi has her original comic and Chauvel has still managed to put out minicomics and illustrations. So it's not like they just stopped doing anything entirely.

I've heard that theory, but I don't think it makes sense. It takes time and money to model and animate things in a particular way, and then it takes even more time and money to fix it. It's a complete waste of resources.
I think some executive felt weirded out by Sonic's massive mono-eye and wanted it to look less weird/cartoony, and more like it would fit in a realistic setting. But they made him look way too human-like and it just made the character look even more weird. Everyone found the design so horrible that it was damaging the reputation of the movie, so they fixed it because of all the mockery that they were getting.

Unless I'm mistaken it's supposed to be expensive to render full scenes and adverts tend to pick and choose clips rather than clips being made for adverts, so I somehow doubt the executives and their accountants would ever want to afford pulling a stunt like that.
I also somehow doubt the departments responsible for advertising would enjoy the idea of most of their budget going back to the studio rather than their pockets, their mates' pockets and actually advertising the film.

And then you also have the issue of loose lips - it'd probably be very easy for it to come out that it was a ploy even before it happened.

Early Sonic concept art took artistic inspiration from old-school cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse and Felix the Cat. Old black-and-white drawings of Mickey in particular looked like he had a similar mono-eye (later cartoons would add some definition/detail, so the actual eye part was smaller and it was surrounded by pale skin).

This is supposed to be the earliest Sonic concept art piece, from back when Sonic was envisioned as a rabbit. They thought of making him a rabbit since they wanted to make a fast-paced game, and rabbits are fast. Anyway, the eyes are very Felix-like, and the appearance in general resembles old black-and-white cartoon designs.

And this might just be one of the scariest Sonics I've seen. He might not be an insane Fleetway Super Sonic or anything like that, but this Sonic is uncomfortably down-to-earth kind of scary.
