Insane considering MM9 and 10 have pretty big adaptation potential.

Ian is good when he has a lot of stuff to work with. He can take what is already written about characters and locations and fill in the blanks himself. That's why he's not as good with original stuff and anything that relies on him making more characters and coming up with stories himself.

It's just like any other licensing work. Some writers start from scratch and create something within a franchise and others are better at expanding on what's already there. That's also what superhero comics are. I could see Ian being a good superhero writer. Not counting that one short lived series he did.

He'd been studying the comic and writing fanfics/fancomics for over a decade before he started writing for it officially. I don't agree with all of his takes but he's almost certainly the most knowledgeable person on the planet when it comes to Archie and you can really tell how much he cares about the characters and setting.
Others have mentioned it before, but starting out as a fanfic/fancomic writer means he's fantastic at joining all the obscure bits of lore into new plots
