Instead, Sonic learns that Sally, who believe he was dead obviously, moved on and is in a new relationship with someone else.

We have a mini-story where Sally is shown waiting months for Sonic to come back. The Freedom Fighters, who are also understandably under the impression Sonic is dead, convince Sally that Sonic wouldn't want her to dwell over the past. He'd want her to embrace the future and be happy for his sake.

This goes on for about 10 issues for good drama, ends there, and then they get married, have kids, and Sally becomes Queen while Sonic becomes her consort
