There needs to be a balance. Too little and what's the point. But too much and the adaptation will lose its identity.
Both eras of Archie did this largely well: Preboot obviously had issues when Sonic Adventure came around, but it led to some different takes on elements of the games. Meanwhile Reboot Archie is more of a love letter to the franchise, basically a melting pot of all the western media and the games (even the ones Sega themselves ignore) and constructing a cohesive universe out of all of it, while using certain elements to springboard new ideas.

I'm sure the fanbases largely already overlapped and Archies (I'm no that far in tbf) seemingly pretty different story to the games made the decision to not do it make sense but not doing anything instead of trying to capitalize on it just seemed odd.

I think ignoring Archie was more or less a byproduct of Sega of America and Sega of Japan being at each others' throats for pretty much most of the 90s. Even disregarding SoJ giving zero shits about the comic, SoA was too busy getting into squabbles with SoJ to really care about the comic at this point, let alone seriously integrating its lore into official games. The whole situation was a lose-lose-lose, and even if Sega of Japan and America were in perfect harmony with each other, I'd imagine they'd both clamp down on what the comic could and couldn't do quite a bit more than they did.

Though if there was a storyline that wasn’t being artificially extended for the sake of mandates, Robotnik would move past this anyway as the only logical thing he would do is try to become a literal god through his technological prowess. No need for extra bodies anymore, he’s beyond that. Had Archie been allowed to continue towards its planned ending, I think we would’ve seen this concept in action as part of the final showdown.

What would have been way better was if Sally slapped him the moment he came back because while she has been in a hell of her own in her grief, Sonic just swoops back in like nothing has changed. Then Sally could break things off right after and walk away in tears because she just can’t handle being around him at the moment.


Then let’s make it better, there can be actual consequences from the slap or something idk I haven’t thought it out that far.

Point is, Bollers wrote it like a retard, and Sally got to be a mentally disabled jerk to Sonic with no real consequences and the whole thing is basically forgotten for a while.


That and Jon Gray’s art being even more exaggerated than usual in this scene makes me feel like it’s simply a bad dream.
