I really like STHZ, but the biggest flaw is probably how little the other non-Sonic characters contribute overall. It seemed like things were changing by the time of the most recent arc, with everyone growing stronger, but the comic stopped well before that. Biggest flaws with Unbound is that 99% of it is effectively just the fanfic or lost media, which sucks - still fun though.

Pfft, fuck no. Frontiers in its English script did more to repair her actual characterization than anything since. Boom (mostly the show) gave her depth she hadn't had in DECADES until that point. Meanwhile, the Japanese script for the former somehow made her even more of a generic flat caricature.

The shit that flattened Amy out was X and the games released around that time. It's only very, very recently that they've been trying to fix what went wrong with her characterization.

I'm not sure if it's widely known, but Sonic X was actually tightly integrated with Sonic Team's (admittedly not great) vision at the time. Yoshimura (who later wrote 06 and Unleashed) wrote a number of episodes and was Maekawa's partner in crime on Sonic Team's lore committee.
While I personally don't like their take on Sonamy, I can see what they were going for and appreciate that they at least softened it by Unleashed/Black Knight
