Sonic and Blaze literally can't work without forcing one into entirely different circumstances or changing their personality wholesale. Blaze can't even stay in Mobius for very long without threatening to destabilize it IIRC, and Modern Sonic is never going to agree to become royalty and live forever in the Sol Dimension unless he's literally forced into it. It's a crackship, and it's better to just accept it for that.

It's the strongest (romantic?) pairing of the game universe, because the bar of interaction with the rest of the cast was set way too low, but also doesn't work that well in other adaptations.

It's like from 10 limited points of meaningful interaction Sonic could spend on the entire cast, they spent like 6 on Blaze alone.

At least the bad relationship writing seems to be in a process of being fixed in Frontiers, seeing Sonic actually give a damn about Knuckles and Amy makes him a more believable character, his brother relationship with Tails has been written terribly alongside the years, his reactions and emotions are far from being realistic.

Blaze never had this problem, she is written in an emotionally realistic way and shows realistic romantic tension in a way people expect to be normal, that's why they seem to have a more overtly fleshed out relationship in comparison to the other characters that we know are close to Sonic, but they don't behave realistically in comparison to her.

Shadow = Natural innate ability, Shadow doesnt give as much of a fuck about him as Metal Sonic but is still a challenge regardless just by doing his own thing which appeals to Sonic's own independence. Most wild card rival
Jet = biggest mutual competitive spirit, two sportsmen just shit talking each other
Knuckles = most friendly rivalry, more based on each others' history and rambunctious personalities than speed

Obviously these are influenced heavily by my headcanon and what I'd like to see, but what matters is I think there's a lot to explore with each of Sonic's presented rivals and they don't necessarily need to be just about raw speed, thats what Metal is for

If anything it's the opposite. 06 was originally a game about cops/soldiers with psychic abilities but with the impending release of the next gen consoles, Sega wanted a Sonic game.
My speculation is Blaze was originally developed for Rush, but the reincarnation thing was added so they could have Blaze fit both games. Frankly I think Elise was originally Blaze, which would've been a lot less controversial than Sonic kissing a human. With Silver's game being canceled, it's all ultimately another piece of interesting lore they're probably never going to revisit.

When it comes to Sega, I'll personally believe it when I see it. Frontiers was a step in the right direction since they finally acknowledging that the previous games exist again. The Chaos Emeralds lore was interesting too, as was setting up The End as a recurring villain.
