Tails could probably develop some security system to kill Eggman if he comes within a 50 mile radius of the thing. Shadow might also be a good pick, but I'd never subject him to that.

Gayemeralds has a series where the Master Emerald/Chaos Emeralds/Chaos Force are in fact an unhinged evil cosmic horror, if that means anything. That's one of the few AUs where they're explicitly bad news though, alongside Fleetway kind of.

But losing the emeralds in the Modern continuity would have meant that The End would successfully complete its goal of total omnicide. Or that Solaris would have eaten the multiverse sooner, rather than later.

I always liked one change made by the 4kids dub (i know) where someone, I think it was Cosmo, said that Knuckles kept falling for Eggman's tricks because he wanted to believe that Eggman secretly had a good heart deep down.

Shade's not in satAM, and everyone had four fingers in satAM and AoStH. The three-part Archie pilot comic also had four fingers, but changed to five for the Sega characters in the main series. Underground also had five fingers. I'm now realizing I know too much about Sonic fingers, send help!

The implication based on later parts (chronologicallly) is that Sonic did in fact kill and eat Tails. But this is most likely an idealized scenario in his head where Tails was probably 'chill' with it. The reality was no doubt far more grim.
