NTA but I see him as the second, and pretty much how StC handled things. The way I see it is the ritual that trapped Tikal and Chaos inside the Master Emerald also bound Knuckles to it, choosing the tribe's greatest warrior to protect the gem. It keeps him alive, but he's unable to leave the island for too long without it pulling him back.
I also like to think he and Tikal were dating and that's the real reason he's been protecting the Emerald, although he doesn't remember this anymore and Tikal doesn't bring it up in SA1 since it would only hurt him.

It really depends on the size of the team, their release schedule, and how efficient they are. A committed group could put out an issue a month but that's rarely the case. The most consistent comics are the ones done by 1-2 people. Sonic the Continuation, Sonic Frenzy, and Go! Go! Super Sonic! are a few examples of that. Okida has help with page composition after taking over art duties full time. Frenzy and Super Sonic are done by people with crazy output speed. MeanBean has also put out hundreds of pages but as we all know they go around between different AUs and franchises. ASO has upped their quality but the releases are very far apart. Sonic Retold has had some huge hiatuses but that's back to updating regularly. Sonic Legacy had that whole thing with one of the writers but seems to be back on track and also upped their quality. And then there's Sonic and the Freedom Fighters, consistently putting out two pages a week :)
