I know some people only swear by the Japanese version of the Sonic lore, but seeing Sonic 2 was actually developed by the American team (CD was by the Japanese one) I tend to give more weight to the American lore of Sonic 2, o I consider that descritpions of events to be the canon one.

That barely qualify as a retcon. SA1 was always full of reference to the events of the classic games.
