I'd argue the islands theory is just a way to walk back on two worlds without raising a stink about why Sonic only visited human people settlements in Unleashed and animal people settlements in Forces. My guess is we'll see both living together in the next game if Sonic goes anywhere populated.
Personally I don't mind some settlements being mostly one or the other considering the accessibility issues. Sonic wouldn't be able to drive a human car and humans wouldn't be able to fit through most animal people doors
