His initial story was that he proposed this idea of siphoning Chaos Emerald energy so the Floating Island could one day rejoin the earth, it got turned down because of insufficient testing and potential risk, and then the dude just went nuts and thought the whole world was against him and decided to fuse with a bunch of emeralds and take over the world in revenge.
