When the comic started it was firmly established as being in the same continuity as the general SatAM/Archie scene.

After a while all the Sonic connections were removed all the characters were redesigned to distance them, especially Lothar who was redesigned to look nothing like Knuckles (for the worse).

Yeah it didn't dramatically impact the comic at all, but still, kinda weird.

Personally, I don't think there was any real reason to remove all the obvious Sonic stuff or redesign the characters so drastically when it's still obviously a Sonic fancomic. It just mostly comes across as pointless, especially when it's easy to justify the original narrative from the context of "there's a bunch of shit happening on Mobius that isn't related to Sonic and co".

It might not have really changed how the stories went or anything, but it meant they drastically retooled the world and setting for no real reason and had to come up with even MORE justifications for certain jokes when previously, they could just blame it on Mobian/Mobius weirdness.
