Paying is an incentive to do what you say but not a guarantee. If the artist doesn't like the subject, it'll show (I can't draw things for my friend because of that kind of thing, it makes me vewy sad).
Ask for redraws sparingly - do make yourself aware of the artist's other work from the past year to see if the reason Sonic holding Tails'
hand looks shit is because the artist can't draw hands, because you can't actually ask what the drawfag is shit at.
Remember that an artist is not necessarily a wealth of imagination and experience, and solving that problem is not straightforward.
If you just want something done even if it's amateurish, you can probably walk up to most new internet artists with no sense of the value for their time and they'll be happy for the interaction + pocket money. They just might burn out fast on their own embarrassment and clam up/run away, which just means thanking them for their time and moving on.
