Well yes and no. For artists who got their start/got big doing fandom related stuff it's often difficult for them to adapt or acclimate to new fandoms or even original content, but at the same time I think there's often a complacency in sticking with what you started with, especially if a majority of your viewer base is there for that specific fanbase. It's understandable as seeing a decline in engagement when you stray away from that can be discouraging, often times they're just not willing to give it a shot beyond small experiments.

I think there's a good middle ground. Some people just like the edge and applying it to an otherwise family friendly brand. Sonic usually caters to teens and older and a lot of those fans get older and want more mature content from it. But then Sega puts out barebones Sonic stories and E-T rating action. If I did a Sonic comic then I'd stay close to the adventurous tone of the franchise but giving characters more in terms of backstory and personality. You make me think that Sonic succeeds in making this edgy content appealing because it is, on the surface, built to be enjoyed by children. It makes these more mature elements come off as more profound. When you actually switch to something that isn't meant to be enjoyed by children suddenly it is way less impressive and appealing to throw in the typical edgy elements you expect from Sonic.

Ian hasn't been setting the world on fire with his non-Sonic content either. Drogune's a bore and that other furry comic he did was... there. I suppose having Sonic characters and world and lore as a starting point makes things easier.

It always depends on your audience. Know who you'll reach, where to reach them, and what they are the most interested in.

It's very simple. If you like something as a kid and you get older, you may want to see your favorite thing mature as you do or at least start getting elements for things you like. Or you just want to see thing you like be different and it makes you happy and nostalgic.
