Note: I might have to take a break suddenly to do an errand but if I do then I’ll be back in around an hour. If I don’t need to do it then tonight will go on as normal.

It’s time for a comic based on Sonic Unleashed! The Heart of a Monster starts us off the same way Unleashed does but… I’m sure some drastic changes happen. Let’s find out together in this series that is still being updated! The last page came out six days ago! We’ll do the first two chapters tonight and since they’re both 50+ pages we’ll do one chapter, take only one break for the night, and then do the other and call it a night. Tomorrow we’ll do the rest of the series.

The game did do something with it, though. The problem is that, despite being an overall solid story for a Sonic game, the middle point was sorely lacking, so all we got to take a glimpse into Sonic's thoughts about the whole thing were the two cutscenes with Amy and that one cutscene of him and Chip in Adabat.

Very good mix of lightheartedness and darker moments, perhaps the best in the series in that regard IMO. The middle part of the story is a little weak, however. They shouldn't have relegated so much shit to the optional dialogue boxes of the characters in the hubs, there should've been more cutscenes.

I'm guessing a pattern here among these fancomics. It seems like these artists just love to pair up Sonic into romance, in one direction or another, over whichever sexuality as they please, but all for possibly the sake of satisfying the artists themselves.

You raise a good point. Megaman usually succeeds because he's able to use Wily's tech and the Master's powers against them. Assuming he's unable to do that with Eggman's robots he's pretty overwhelmed. Sonic stands a bit of a better chance but assuming each Master is built as tough as Metal he's got a serious fight in for him, especially without being able to copy powers.

Undoubtedly, no one does Sonic's characterization better. He's also responsible for completing Tails' SA1 character arc, showing that he is a hero in his own right. He writes fun plots with believable stakes (for a story about a talking blue hedgehog), fantastic characterization, and nuance that we don't see anywhere else from Sonic Team.

Yes that's his ship IIRC because he grew up on Archie Sonic. He's also fine with Sonamy and can work with it. Of course that matters little when Sega stopped Sonic from having any romantic relationship and Amy is just permanently lusting for Sonic and can't move on to someone that would actually appreciate the attention.

This. The "totally a free spirit bro" version of Sonic that some people (even a poster in this thread at one point) seem to idolize and that the mandates enforce isn't actually Sonic. It's a caricature who'd lack any social relationships whatsoever and probably wouldn't even busy himself with stopping Eggman or other villains since that's an actual task that requires effort and would get in the way of his "free as the wind" lifestyle. People who love adventure like Sonic does can totally hold down a romantic relationship, even with all of the commitments that has.

I think the best example of Sonic still being adventurous but also in a healthy relationship with a home life have been the Arsworlds Sonamy comics. He still leaves and does his own thing, but he has a family life that he's willing to put his need for thrills and excitement aside for.

I think it's down to how much a person wants Sonic to have as a character. There are other things like backstory and family that he's lacking. Sega is fine with that because their past attempts at changing things have led to failure and embarrassment. But there are those, like me, that want more and think he's just lacking as a character. If he was just a simple platform character with a simple plot for his games as his only stories then he's fine as he is. But with Adventure and the various versions of him, his simplistic classic self (as well as the separation of the classic era) makes him feel way too flat and undefined as a character. Sega doesn't want anyone else to add to him but they're not good enough to do it themselves and they barely build upon what they have. So Sonic and the franchise as a whole is just... stuck. Can't wait to see how Frontiers turn out, good or bad.

Thing is, there's plenty of game-only fans that also want his character to get expanded upon.

I mean, take the non-Japanese and non-American fans, whose primary (if not only) method of engaging with the franchise has been the games (myself included hehe). We've grown up watching the games develop fun narratives and then just quietly give up at a certain point in time. That hasn't pleased anyone except those that aren't even fans of the franchise in the first place. Even though we didn't grew up with the shows, the comics or the mangas we're still familiar with the bigger narratives of the older games and we miss them just as much as you do.

The problem IMO is that SEGA is s t i l l trying to pander to the people that give zero shits about the franchise as a whole beyond maybe just the memes. Things might be changing, thanks to the warm reception the movie received, but it's still too early to tell.

I thought Drogune was alright, but felt a bit meandering. By the time they start getting into the plot, the comic goes on hiatus, which is pretty frustrating. Character designs were great though, although the main character looked male. Not that I minded, the comic works just as well if you imagine her as a cute twink.
