Alright, updated the list, added Sea3on which still updates every Friday which is something I wish more of these comics have done. That will require watching SatAM but I have a list of the episodes on Youtube that I'll post when I get around to this. Not all of these would be storytimed, mainly the lesser known ones or those I don't think are worth it. Maybe save those for the very end.

It's pretty common for the creators of fanworks to use a franchise they like as a way to more comfortably express themes and ideas that they otherwise couldn't. Nowadays, it's mostly kids trying to cover ideas considered too mature for them, so you end up with suffering and death acted out by cartoon characters. In the 70s a lot of the Star Trek fanworks were Kirk x Spock, because there weren't many avenues to safely express an interest in same-sex relationships.

Sonic's really good for this since there's just enough obscure lore to build on, but enough blanks that you can take the series anywhere. There's also lots of continuities outside of the games to draw from, with 5 from official comics, several mangas, and 6 (7 soon) cartoons.

She worked on Archie before everything between them and Sega ended and now she's on IDW writing for the main Sonic comic. It's really tough to get a lot of things done because Sega would have to okay it. Things like characters not having any romance, game characters having to be written a certain way, characters from older games can't be used, etc.
