Reading the entire comic, I have to say that Nicole was ironically closer to Sally and more useful before she got a body, in a sense she was a part of Sally's character and her "powerset". After that she's pretty pointless and used mostly for drama, and it doesn't surprise me that the thing she's remembered for the most is the yuribait teasing in the reboot. Even when she got her super form it was something exclusive to the digital world so she didn't even have any kind of interesting abilities despite having such a great concept for a character.
Sage is absolutely superior when it comes to being an AI companion that develops a sense of humanity, and at being a positive addition to the character she's tied to.

What was done with Nicole was so bad that it caused people to start retconning Sally's pre-reboot personality in fanworks to become a lesbo so it caters to their fetish better, basically tearing the personality of both characters apart so it fits the mold of a generic lesbian relationship, it's absolutely entropic.
Another problem that Nicole has is that she has no meaningful interactions with any game character, despite having been given so much focus both in the preboot and reboot. Ironically one of the most meaningful interactions she does have is a crush on Sonic from when she swapped bodies with Sally, this is another thing that Yurifags memoryhole completely and that drags her character down even more.

I truly find Archie Sonic fandom fascinating. By all accounts this book never should have lasted more than a couple of years. It lasted over 20 and nearly broke 300 issues. That's better than a lot more mainstream books. People say the fandom is weird and on some level they are, but are they really so worse than most other fandoms of longer running books? I mean you can say a lot but they were passionate. They did support their title. I suppose furries get a bad rub on things by nature but still. That the book survived is really impressive in a lot of ways. You can point to a normal book or any vidya tie in and they're DEAD almost immediately.

I do like that they left the issue open instead of Ellidy just on the stop deciding to make Nicole his new daughter. That's pretty mature. His pain isn't gone and it still kind of hurts but he's trying and it has more impact that way. Had the book continued maybe we could have seen them work together on more projects and bond. But alas.

I don't know if it's an unpopular opinion but I find reboot Rotor to be the best FF redesign in terms of fitting alongside game characters. I think it helps that he never had hair of any kind so it was just a matter of giving him shoes, gloves and changing his proportions.

Fuck this timeline. And while Sallicole is not my favorite ship, I'm disappointed. We couldn't even get that further explored, after we lost Sonally. And then of course, we lost everything else.
I don't much care for shipping in general but at least here I can see plenty of material to support it. Personal I'm just in to see cute things. Call it sisterly, call it friendship, call it full homo. I just like the idea of characters actually getting to be close and protective. It's cute. Personally I generally see things in these series through a more innocent light in general.

My only issue with Sonic and Sally breaking up Preboot-wise is that Sally has more reasonable options than Sonic (Khan, Nicole), but who does Sonic have? Amy? I honestly don't think find their relationship that attractive to be a couple, compared to the games where Amy is obviously tailored to be Sonic's endgame if he were to get into a relationship and the only female he has known the longest.

The slap actually made total sense. Sally has been through a lot of shit during the war and then Sonic suddenly came back after a year of her grieving and try to get past his death. That will do some shit to someone. And she wasn't ready to just lose him again.
The problem was the build up to that moment. Bollers, in the events before Sonic "died", wrote Sally into a corner where she was a whiny character who didn't do anything other than be useless and always obey daddy dearest without any real resistance. That is not the Sally we know and even the Sally from the slapstick era would've just ignored her Father and go run out to assist Sonic and the others.
Not to mention how Penders kept fucking with her character before all of this as well.
And then in the issue itself where the slap begins, it makes zero sense. There's the initial reunion, then everyone acts like nothing happened, including Sally. Okay, that's fine, kids comic after all. But then Bollers turns to the dial to 11 and suddenly Sally snaps into her expected behavior much later into that story, and the conflict happens in public.
It's just so weird. Yes, mental health can do weird things but this conflict should've happened earlier and Sally should've been at least very clingly around Sonic the whole time as this was building up. This conflict was just... out of nowhere and at the same time, not. But it all fell apart because of how Bollers had constructed all sequences of events prior to the slap.
He should get as much flack as Penders, in terms of writing anyway. If it weren't for how he built towards the slap, this would've been seen as a hard moment for Sally and Sonic and a sad predicament that would have had the readers freaking out over what would happen between them here on out. But no, the slap ended up being the straw that broke the camels back after many pother straws that left a bad taste in reads mouths.

Especially if you try to do it post Mecha-Sally. I could see a storyline where Sally remains roboticized, and she feels like a lost cause for Sonic, and breaks things off with her. In her continued suffering, guilt, and desire to feel again like before, Nicole is there to comfort her directly, and they bond. That's the easiest way I think of doing this without it feeling forced.

Good point, even in the Reboot this would need to be addressed. This will raise the question of "Can an AI or a robot really feel like a human does" to the highest level in the story.
And then of course, the issue of Sally and Nicole being able to physically bond with each other. Sally could go to the digital world, but that's just a shortcut, and Nicole desires to be more real like everyone else. Perhaps a story where she manages to get an actual body?

I feel like this is an issue that might get overlooked especially with AI. Nicole doesn't understand her own emotions or even emotions in general. She's not a child but she is somewhat alien in many regards. She doesn't know how to actually process a lot of her thoughts and feeling so her how her friends interpret them is going to require a lot of delicateness because any wrong step and they're just interpreting and imposing their own feelings onto her which would only result in further confusion and potentially damage. So I don't think Nicole should be in any romantic situation largely for this reason. At least not for a long while.

This would require for her to get past her limitations and learn who she can be, and how she can feel. As it is the reboot, she is already beginning to feel more and more, despite not fully knowing these emotions.
Maybe Sally could help her with this process. But yeah, for Sally to engage romantically at this stage, that would be problematic. Perhaps that could be addressed as well where Sally realizes that Nicole isn't ready yet for a more advanced relationship, and Nicole realizes this as well.

With the Archie series, the advantage writers have when compared to Games and IDW is that the world has such a rich grab-bag to pull from. So just 'chilling and relaxing' with the cast works really well for narratives in Archie.
