They were a vocal minority. I remember interacting with the Knuckles side of the Archie Sonic fanbase in forums back in the mid 2000s.
They were basically autistic lorefags that shat on any issue that didn't feature Knuckles or his family, but most readers didn't care about it.
The echidnas came to be seen as bloat on the comic. There's a reason Bollers and Flynn started systematically getting rid of them.
And of course Penders still seethes about it to this day.

Is he a GUN agent, or does he just work with Rouge sometimes? Does he save people because it was what Maria wanted, or has he left the past behind? Does he feel a moral obligation to help people, or does he just want to fight strong opponents? What does he do other than brooding alone in wastelands all day?

Until SEGA answers some of these questions, he's a complete fucking blank of a character.

All he did was get a cheap shot, like when the reserve FFs cheapshotted Sonic. In a straight fight Scourge and Geoffrey both beat the shit out of Antoine. As proven with Sonic getting cheapshotted by Anti-Antoine, who Sonic said was a much better fighter than regular Antoine, then beating up Anti-Antoine later when he actually was prepared.
