Real talk, I actually quite like the idea of showing the enemy the Knuckles Clan was fighting. I think Chronicles might've implied it was the Nocturnus, but otherwise the games don't really explain why Pachamanac was so desperate that he unleashed an ancient god monster on the world.

The Felidae themselves are okay, but I never felt they came across as that big a threat. I like that clothing=role part of their culture though. And it's just plain hilarious that Big of all people is one of them. I can just imagine one of Big's ancestors being a bloodthirsty general leading the charge.

Also, the other Felidae don't look very much like Big, which was obviously a mistake. Seriously, what the hell.

I always hated how Chaos’s design gets worse with every Emerald he gets. He started out as a super unique looking water lobster creature then devolves into a fish. Chaos 6 is his worst form, the spider form looks so stupid and derpy. At least Perfect Chaos managed to salvage things a bit but it’s still kind of a stock Kaiju, Chaos 0 is still his most aesthetically pleasing form.

Blaze and Amy and Big can swim, everyone runs underwater because that's the gameplay. Including Tails and Knuckles, they run underwater too. Sonic's the only one that can't swim. He's the only one that wears a lifejacket in the olympics, as a nod to it.
Besides it not being mentioned isn't a strong point that it's not there. Knuckles liking grapes is never mentioned in the games either. If X and Boom both let him be afraid of water, and he's the only character who can't swim, then he probably is scared of it.

It's part of the standard control scheme and they kept it in the remake so it's almost certainly intentional. Knuckles' infinite jump in Boom can only be triggered by pausing and unpausing the game. While it isn't swimming, it is a technique that allows him to quickly surface so I don't think he would be worrying about drowning in this game. Fucking loved it as a kid and still like the story. It was the DX version, but I wasn't aware of the qol differences at the time and was just happy to finally experience SA1 in some form.

I did emulate the original via Flycast. Haven't played through all ofbit but I did still enjoy Sonic's gameplay. It's rough around the edges and the cutscenes are jank af, but I'm not sure how much of the latter is because of faulty emulation or just early 3D growing pains.

In Sonic Battle, Gerald speaks of 4 great civilizations, with the 4th being the Nocturnus Clan. We can interpret to be civilizations that were powerful and made use of the Chaos Emeralds so working backwards this would give us:
The Fourth Great Civilization: the Nocturnus Clan

The Second Great Civilization, whoever built the non-Echidna ruins on South Island and Westside Island. The carvings seem to be horned owls, which tracks with the movies since we saw Owls fighting Echidna. The Babylonians were powerful, but never really used the Chaos Emeralds so they're probably separate

Angel Island was also a part of a larger landmass until the Master Emerald raised it into the sky. We can assume Tails' Workshop from Sonic Adventure is in Westside Island since he's lived there a while and Westside Island is where he grew up. We also know there are ruins of a Bird civilization on South and Westside Islands, and they're both associated with the Chaos Emeralds.

I know most people assume Tails' Workshop is on a Human landmass, but you have to take a train journey to get there, and in SA2 (and other games) we see long roads crossing open water on the maps. Tails also says that things have changed a lot ever since the train station was built so it's a recent thing. There's really no way to definitively prove all this though.
