Eggman has shown he actually gives a shit about his family to a degree before - he idolized Gerald before he found out the man had utterly lost it and sought to damn the entire world. He doesn't consider Orbot and Cubot, and possibly to a lesser degree Metal, to be his actual sons but the Egg Memos explicitly spell out that Sage is basically his Maria equivalent. It also helps that Sage is so loyal she actively sacrificed herself for him and the world and never once pissed him off or betrayed him like almost all of his funkiest have.

Most OCs are female because they're the artist's self insert and from my experience female artists are more likely to make an OC. That's not the say there aren't a lot of male OCs and/or ones made by male artists. Most of those are just hedgehog recolors or overpowered "badass" and cool characters. Usually both. A hot female OC is easier to push than a cool male OC. And an OC really tells you about the artist, especially their most used one. A good artist can make their OC more appealing regardless of gender.

Some things to hash out for that kind of concept: motivations for each party, non-contrived reasons for why they meet up and why they can't just talk things out (or bonus points for maybe they can talk things out, but motivations and/or ideologies clash so they fight anyway), and if you're really dedicated, why the character won't just end up being a "Sonic's friend" by the end. Knuckles, Shadow, Blaze, and Silver are pretty good examples. Archie Mega Man's Blues is also a good example and he gets to stay a bit more independent from the main character than most Sonic characters are allowed to I think. There's a lot of places you can go with the concept but some people only try to emulate examples they've liked in other media or stick rigidly to general storytelling conventions without branching out.

There's a comic with an OC and the first thing he does is beat Sonic in a race. I immediately lost interest in the comic. As for flaws, a lot of people will give their OC shonen faults like being naive or dumb but they just bullshit out a win. The only thing worse than someone confidently being better is someone being better and treating it like it's no big deal or not understanding how. It's fine when Sonic pulls out an impossible win because it's been his thing for decades but when some newbie comes along and does it then it doesn't feel earned. That's what a lot of people need to realize. The Xanthi character from the No Regrets comic raised a red flag for me in that she was the creator of the Phantom Ruby but it tied into her having the need to redeem Infinite. She's also very powerful but in a way no other character is so she's not stepping on any toes.

There definitely ought be more mobian male fan-characters, that's for sure, for smut and everything's sake, though they are seemingly much less prominent, sadly. Suffice to say, something I would wish to see more around is artists scratching deep the untapped market of Sonic and bara stuff. Lemme tell you, it's a real desert there as of right now.

Silliness aside, I think that image I posted of husky is a bit misleading. He's meant as small and lean, like an otter, likely meant as self-insert for the artist, especially as he's often paired with Rotor. Here, better picture.
