Being stubborn to the point of recklessness or being nettled hard enough that they ignore the obvious danger signs and rush in. Sonic Prime, for all its flaws, actually manages to do this well by having Sonic smash the Paradox Prism due to getting baited and not listening to Tails when he's explaining how unstable it is. It also helps to make it clear that the character regrets what they did and resolves to try and fix their fuck up.

What has happened with Tekno and Ebony is the exact opposite. They are pretty much made into the villains of their respective arcs solely for the sake of cheap drama and destroying what could have been.

I didn't really mind the whole thing with Plunder, because outside of revealing that the gag toon character was actually a Tantaror and getting rid of his ghost crew member (admittedly q missed opportunity to have Plunder still have another loyal original member of his crew), Okida leaves Plunder himself more or less unchanged. Even better, he fucking redeems him after the atrocious cliffhanger the original story left him on where he's cursed to shit and lost literally everything. I'm fine with removing two of his crew, both of which were mostly comedic relief at the best of times, if it means that he undoes that stupidity that they shafted him with.

More than that though, Plunder and the Sky Pirates actually get fucking USED. The latter end up being the big bads of the first few arcs of the comic even and the consequences of their stuff show up even in the spinoff comics. We haven't even fucking seen Plunder in STCO ever since Kane used a statement from him to frame Sonic, let alone had him in any major role.
