It's just super unlikely at this point - the way the world is set up means that they'd have to make anything tying in to Frontiers or Prime out of continuity or simply never acknowledge the events of those stories from an actual narrative standpoint if they DO happen.

Hopefully they stop trying to set them up to fight Sonic and Tails since it's obvious someone on the writing team or the higher ups refuse to have Sonic get his shit kicked in even just once. The mystery of who Surge and Kit were before being abducted(?) by Starline is by far the most interesting thing about their characters and IDW should really lean into that.

If they seriously insist on having Surge and Kit bail out of every encounter with Sonic and co. then just go all in on the concept and have them be hit-and-run type villains instead of this uncomfortable middle ground. Have them wreck up shit and immediately bail before Sonic can even be dispatched, that way they are a genuine threat while still retaining that "they must always job to Sonic" bit. You can't job if you can't get caught.

The artist/writer for the entire comic has plotted out the entire story and his descriptions beneath the covers for each issue on his DA includes full stories detailing what goes down. It eventually culminates in what's probably the highest non-multiversal killcount of any Sonic comic we've done.

if i can throw my 2 cents on the whole IDW Shutdown possibility, i think sega has 3 outcomes:

They own the republication rights so they could hand it over to a new publisher and have them reprint the trade paperbacks if they wanted. The comic team are contractors so they could come along to the new company without issue, as they did from Archie to IDW. Technically they could do that with the Archie issues too, which is why they had the covers in Sonic Mega Collection. It’s not like the cartoons, where the studios retain some IP rights
