They typically use him as a love rival, but good lord do they make him into a monstrous asshole to do so. In-universe, it almost always comes off as severe envy and Sonic being pissed that Amy is "leaving him", so he starts throwing senseless tantrums.

Ironically, Love & Life is probably one of the few Shadamy-focused stories were Sonic clearly loves Amy and is jealous of Shadow over it, but manages to put it behind him to save her and still be there for her.
