Generations is probably the best recent game, and fans have modded heaps of fantastic levels. The Unleashed Project ported all the daytime stages to Generations and is a great way to play if you don't want to deal with the Werehog. All Stars Racing Transformed is also great. The other 3d games can be a lot of fun too, but I'd play these first since they're more accessible to new players.
