Sonic quite literally doesn't have any other options beyond Shadow and Amy. All but the most delusional Sonaze shippers recognize that he'd never get with Blaze and that they consider themselves close friends, with Silver taking up 99% of the Blaze shipping nowadays.

His only other option is Sally in the Archie continuity, but compared to the first two she's third place despite winning in her continuity. At best.

That's why the gay stuff works so well. Ignoring Boom, we've (arguably) had a little flirting with Blaze, although you could easily read more flirting with Shadow. As for Amy, they've had one scheduled date that was interrupted by the Black Knight game. The only reason we know that heterosexuality exists in the franchise is the NPCs in SA1 and Unleashed. We don't even know if Vanilla is hetero (she could've had IVF), and the only other 'parents' are Gerald and Black Doom.

It's my absolute favorite take on the franchise. It nails the characterization and provides a cool world for them to explore. It's also set in a post-disaster future, where the people live in a futuristic utopia, but there's still the dangerous land of darkness to explore. There's so much potential for comfy slice of life episodes in the land of the sky, and dangerous adventures with real stakes in the land of darkness.
