It's Sonic, there is no explanation for a ship, back in the day, I saw fujos shipping Tails X Metal because "Tails likes Sonic and machines, obviously".
Still, in this case, I say the main responsibles are Bigdad and Michiyoshi, plus that one Sonicfag who has commissioned 90% of the artwork from other artists. Bigdad with his amazing Rouge redesign (funny enough, his only Sonic redesign I truly like), which everyone started copying, thus leading people towards his art, and you know the math:

The ship was born and bred in the nsfw zone of the Sonic fandom (as so many other crackships have, of course).
But this one in particular, as the other anons pointed out, truly barely exists outside the nsfw part of the fandom (as they said, KrazyElf stuff barely manages to stay out of it, and if you see it, even then, you might still question yourself if you can post it in a blue board).

It's Sonic, there is no explanation for a ship, back in the day, I saw fujos shipping Tails X Metal because "Tails likes Sonic and machines, obviously".
Still, in this case, I say the main responsibles are Bigdad and Michiyoshi, plus that one Sonicfag who has commissioned 90% of the artwork from other artists. Bigdad with his amazing Rouge redesign (funny enough, his only Sonic redesign I truly like), which everyone started copying, thus leading people towards his art, and you know the math:

In the games, they never talk to each other about anything that isn’t Sonic. Not even once. The character guides never mention them as having any relationship sith eachother either, not even once. None of the “related goods” either. If you’re talking about Archie, guess what? The sum total of a “relationship” they ever had, was Amy pointing her tongue at Tails in a 5-page b-story about them going to school, then never again. Everything after that point Amy’s character is butt-nothing but obsessing about “SonicSonicSonic” like a broken record, just like the games in fact.

You remember that recent classicverse IDW story where Tails reads Amy’s fanfiction about shipping herself and Sonic? That alone is more than the sum total of all their “interaction” across the entire rest of the franchise, COMBINED.

Like, ship what you want. But don’t pretend like your headcanons for them are real just because you imagined them, because they’re not. Tails and Amy never interact with eachother, not even a bit. They can barely even be said to be friends.

Amy and Tails not interacting can be blamed solely on Sega and Sonic Team's atrocious storytelling and them steadily making the characters less and less defined over time. That's not a part of the setting that's just Sega being retarded and not knowing what to do with its own characters. Lime, just to add to this, Tails doesn't even have proper interactions with Knuckles outside of Heroes (and even then, there's barely anything), I can't recall him EVER interacting with the Chaotix beyond the bare minimum of them sharing scenes, his interactions with Rouge just consist of teasing and not much else, Cream interacting with him is almost as minimal, etc. This applies to every character in the games not named Sonic, Eggman or Shadow. They don't really interact with each other in a way that makes you think most of the cast are friends, they just sort of hang around Sonic.

It's why the movies did the relationships better than literally any of the games have done. Because they're actual characters who consistently interact with each other and have an impact upon each other.

At the end of the day, we are forced to make assumptions (or headcanons, if you wanna use the term) regarding the characters interactions, and not take only what we see as absolute (i.e. use our imagination)

For example, if you tell me that Tails and Amy interact from time to time outside of what we see in the games: Yes, I can believe that, they are supposedly friendly terms, and according to certain games, even live or have homes around the same area.
If you tell me that Shadow and Rouge interact outside of the games: Yes, I can believe that... depending, of course, in the latest official position they take regarding GUN and Rouge's government work.
If you tell me that Tails and Shadow interact outside of the games. No, that I would find it hard to believe, based, again, solely on what I know of the characters and what they do.

If this were true for literally anything save unholy abominations against God that not even Sonic stops to try and redeem (Biolizard, Black Doom, Mephiles, Solaris, Time Eater, etc) then he'd have popped two between Eggman's eyes decades ago. The last time Shadow was ruthless enough to kill people with zero hesitation was in STH and that was an amnesiac Shadow who could literally be convinced of any bullshit you wanted, up to him being "Shadow Android" made by Eggman himself and destined to create a world solely for androids and machines. His character development post-true ending (and even in endings where he finds out enough about the ARK to realize he's been lied to for a lot of things) is far more merciful and kind and his tone even reflects this, to the point he spares Eggman in one such route when in almost every other route he just kills him.

Shadow immediately leaping to murder a person whose intent he hasn't even directly confirmed based solely on lingering resentment for Eggman is burying his character development into the fucking ground then paving it over with cement.

Sonic told Shadow nearly immediately at their confrontation that Eggman had lost his memory. Shadow was entirely aware of it, but he just didn't care. He wanted to make sure Eggman will never be a problem again.
I don't remember Shadow's actions allowing Starline to kidnap Tinker. It seemed more like the problem was that the Resistance didn't set up someone to watch over the guy. And some characters blamed Sonic for what happened to Tinker. At least Vector and Shadow pulled an "I told you so" over Sonic's decision to leave Tinker be (which eventually resulted in Tinker reverting back to Eggman and nearly ending the world).

That time when Shadow got infected by the metal virus was really, really dumb. And IDW Shadow in general has different qualities than Archie Shadow. But I don't feel like his attempt to take down Tinker was too unfitting for his character.

We don't know when he first got the nickname, but Sonic is the first person in his life who never treated him like shit (he literally met him on West Side Island whilst wandering around "sad and depressed", and has apparently been bullied for most of his life besides) and is presumably the first person to call him "Tails" without it being an insult. For all intents and purposes, Sonic made the nickname into something Tails owns and prefers instead of his birth name. It doesn't really matter if he was known by it before, because he never let it become his actual name until after he met Sonic.

Canonically, Sonic came to West Side to relax and look for new adventures; he wasn't even aware Robotnik had landed on the other side of the island until later. This was to the point Sonic even outright GAVE Tails the Tornado.

In the games it was literally just Tails wandering around doing nothing, then Sonic naruto-runs past going nowhere like an autist, and Tails somehow reacts to this display of hedgehog down-syndrome with “Wowowow that was so cool I’m gonna do the same” then starts following him around which Sonic lets him do without so much as addressing or speaking to him. Thus begins Sonic 2 and their “amazing friendship”.

Sonic's name is painted on it as early as Adventure, actually. Which is also where he most directly states that it belongs to him. But Adventure is also the game where Tails has his symbol visibly emblazoned on it all over and it's canon that Sonic basically let's Tails use it as his own whenever, to the point it's often in Tails' workshop more than not. For all intents and purposes, it's Tails' plane now.
