Hell, Surge is the closest we get to having him even vaguely show any signs that he's not a total psychopath a philosophy that is literally unhinged and he STILL brushes off the actual legitimate criticisms of his "muh freedom" philosophy in favor of all but trying to tell her that she should just deal with the fact that she and Kit were kidnapped, had their original personalities erased, and were then turned into kill-drones to get rid of and replace Sonic and Tails. I'd say that evil Eggman is the only thing the comic has going for it at the moment. He's edgy and threatening and sticks out like a sore thumb from even the other villains. Everything else about the comic is boring. Squandered potential and all that. I don't want to get into a blaming session over the writers so I'll say everyone is at fault. Literally not allowed. A villain with any degree of real bombast or the capacity to take the stage and be a real threat would immediately take time away from Eggman, and SoJ INSISTS that Eggman be the primary threat in everything. Frontiers is the first piece of media in actual decades where Eggman gets totally sidelined in favor of other villains and it immediately shows that Sonic is at its best when Eggman ISN'T the sole focus. Even then, his creation still takes up the majority of the villain role until The End is revealed.

I also suspect this is why they aren't allowed to use or reference The End in IDW, despite it not only being the most recent big bad, but being very explicitly not dead. It being present would make the very notion of Eggman being a threat completely dead in the water for the duration of its appearance, and SoJ hates that - to them, the franchise can only have one villain who is an actual threat.
