This makes it older than literally everything else in the franchise that isn't the very first game (Sonic 1 came out June 23, 1991, Sonic 2 was all the way done in November 1992, AOSTH was August 1992, SatAM was 1993, Underground was all the way in 1999, etc). It is, quite literally, the first depiction of the characters as characters outside of short blurbs on the sides of manuals and little backstory or random interviews lost to time. It is also where Amy first came about as a concept and character, and guess what? She was Nicky/Sonic's girlfriend, with Sonic explicitly just being a future version of Nicky occasionally jacking into his younger self's body.
If you really want to get into autistic claims of OOC behavior, then literally everything else ever made in the entire franchise is "OOC" due to deviating from the Shogakukan continuity.
You people really need to lay off your Amyhate and touch some fucking grass. You can dislike her or her characterization over the past few decades, but this isn't just cause to hate a ship being made 'canon' or start autistic fits and tantrums to shit on her fans.
