It's more based off the games sure, but that has the effect of them trying to shove in everything and it just coming across as half-assed. Sonic 2 had a ton of references too, but they were used in the benefit of the plot and narrative, and that gave them gravitas.

The most I can give Mario is that it looks good. There's a resounding shrug of apathy to everything else.
