I actually know webp is better for image size and look, it's just that many website where you can post images don't allow that format (case in point, 4chan here) and I am not too kin on how it's proprietary.

I'd say the best is to let the website load webp image by default, but you can set a toggle so they can be switched to jpg or png, if it's not too much to ask.
